about

The spirals, circulating dots and repeating patterns that I make have appeared on the edges of meeting agendas, on the backs of envelopes
and in the pages of my notebooks for as long as I can remember. I made
a conscious decision to be an artist at the age of four and have not stopped since – along the way I have dabbled in performance art, dance, photography, video production, visual display for retail, jewelry design
as well as art education – but I have always come back to drawing,
my first love.

Shortly after my father passed away in 1987 I began a very unusual journal. I could not write or talk about my feelings at the time so I drew in black ink on the pages of an unused rice paper book left over from my fashion illustration studies. Boxes, swirls, lines, dots and shapes - filled the pages as I sat on the couch in my dorm room for hours. The following summer, rainy days at my job at the Cottage Marionette Theatre in NYC's Central Park gave me access to the full spectrum of Prismacolor markers - and each of the eight pieces created in the previous five months got filled in with brilliant colors.  This was the beginning of the work that I do now. At the time I didn't really understand what this intuitive way of working was about but life has provided many incredibly interesting opportunities to figure it all out.

Peace and blessings,

Catherine
